I am in-network with The Lactation Network. TLN contracts with many insurance companies around the US to provide lactation visits (prenatal and postnatal) at no extra charge to you. TLN is in-network with most Blue Cross PPO, Blue Shield PPO, United Healthcare, Anthem PPO and Cigna PPO plans as well as most plans that utilize MultiPlan and PNOA. TLN is also in-network with VA CCN Regions 1-3.

If you are not covered by TLN, it is important to know the Affordable Care Act says “Health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment for the duration of breastfeeding. These services may be provided before and after birth.”

But what does this mean in reality?

Well, that will depend on your insurance carrier.

My suggestion is to call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card and ask about “reimbursement” for lactation services. If the first person you speak to is not helpful, ask to speak to a manager. After all, the Affordable Care Act clearly states that lactation care should be covered by all insurance companies. You can read more about insurance and breastfeeding benefits HERE. If your insurance requires pre-approval, contact me at laura@healthandlactation.com and I will provide the necessary information — and I will request 6 appointments, spread out over the next 3 months to maximize your personalized care. Some insurance companies, like Aetna, require you to call and request a “network deficiency authorization”. But the first step is to call the customer service number on the back of your card and inquire about reimbursement for lactation care.

Unfortunately, I am not in-network with Capitol Health Plan. CHP is unwilling to provide prior network authorization or reimburse any costs for visits with me.

My self-pay clients (those not in-network with TLN) require payment at the end of each visit. I will provide a superbill which is necessary to file for reimbursement from your insurance company. Please note that Medicaid and Medicare will not accept superbills for reimbursement. Health and Lactation is not responsible for non-responsive insurance companies or cost-sharing. My hope for you is that your insurance company is cooperative, follows the law and values skilled lactation care for you and your baby. Every family deserves that!
